PERSONAL PROTECTION IN THE HOME
Personal Protection in the Home provides basic handgun education and training fundamentals which meet and exceed Michigan's legal requirements for obtaining a Concealed Pistol License or CPL (what many call a CCW). It is the class you need in order to qualify for obtaining your Michigan CPL. This 8 hour class includes both classroom and range instruction.
While this class provides basic information and training, it is not a beginner's class. You should consider taking the Basic Pistol class, first, if you have never fired a handgun, are not familiar with your pistol or need a refresher course so you can consistently hit a target the size of a piece of typing paper at 15 feet.
Group class size is limited to 8 students with a 2-student minimum. Class size restrictions are for range safety reasons. Each class, whether private or group, contains the following instruction and training:
- 5 hours of classroom instruction covering:
- basic firearm & defensive safety
- mental awareness & defensive mindset
- defensive shooting skills, including aiming, shooting positions & firing techniques
- utilizing cover & concealment
- strategies for home & personal safety
- selecting firearms & ammunition for personal protection
- firearms laws related to carrying a concealed pistol in Michigan, including civil liability issues, criminal violations, use of deadly force, the Castle Doctrine laws, avoiding criminal attacks and controlling violent confrontations
- 3 hours or range instruction including:
- range safety issues
- range etiquette
- proper gun handling
- multiple live fire exercises designed to develop basic defensive shooting skills
- NRA handbook and training materials
- A Legal Primer for the Michigan Concealed Pistol Applicant prepared by Richard G. Koefod, J.D.
- 2 Passport quality photographs for your CPL application
- Certificate upon sucessful completion of the course
- Range time (range fee is included in the course tuition)
- NRA membership discounts
- Free lifetime consultation regarding firearms and firearm laws
REQUIREMENTS: You must be at least 21 years old, a Michigan resident and legally able to use a firearm. For the range, you must use eye and ear protection. You need a safe and functioning handgun with 100 rounds of quality factory ammunition. No reloads, +p or magnum rounds will be allowed. Single-action revolvers are not acceptable for this class. Ammunition is a student expense.
HANDGUN RENTALS: I have limited handgun rentals available at $30 for the range session.
LOCATION: Classroom and range activities are generally conducted at Bass Pro Outdoors, located in the Great Lakes Crossing mall in Auburn Hills,MI. TUITION: There are several options for the Personal Protection in the Home course. They are as follows:
Private Lesson Only: $195; Private Lesson with Handgun Rental: $225; Group Class Only: $135; and, Group Class with Handgun Rental: $165.
