Basic Pistol is a 3 1/2 hour NRA course designed for those who have little or no experience in using pistols or revolvers. It provides a hands-on introduction to firearm safety and proper handgun manipulation. It also introduces students to live fire and the principles of handgun marksmanship. It is an ideal class for getting basic firearm training in preparation for taking the required class for obtaining Michigan's CPL.
Group class size is limited to 4 students so maximum attention can be paid to each student. Because class size is kept small, there is flexibility to accommodate individual student needs. Each class, whether private of group, contains the following instruction and training:
- General firearm safety
- Handgun knowledge, including parts and function
- Ammunition knowledge
- Handgun and ammunition selection
- Proper handgun manipulation, including loading, unloading, and passing to another
- Proper handgun cleaning and maintenance
- Pistol shooting fundamentals
- Basic legal issues
- One hour on the range for range instruction and live fire exercises (range fee is included in course tuition)
- NRA Handbook and training materials
- Certificate upon successful completion of the course
- NRA membership discounts to students
- Free lifetime consultation regarding firearms and firearms law
REQUIREMENTS: You must be at least 21 years old and be legally able to use a firearm. For the range, you must use eye and ear protection, which I can provide at no charge. You need a safe and functioning handgun and 30 rounds of quality factory ammunition. No reloads, +p or magnum rounds will be allowed. Ammunition is a student expense.
HANDGUN RENTAL: Because many students taking this class may not have a firearm, I have limited handgun rentals available in several calibers for $10.
LOCATION: While the range time must be conducted at a firearms range, arrangements can be made with students to have the classroom instruction presented in a wide variety of locations. The choice is up to the students. I conduct most classroom instruction at Bass Pro, Krav Maga Detroit or Gander Mountain. Most range instruction is conducted at Bass Pro. Maps to all these locations can be found on the Map link. Alternative arrangements may be made depending upon student locations, as well as classroom and range availability.
